Greta Van Susteren out as Fox News host

Citing sources familiar with the details of the settlement, Vanity Fair reported Carlson would receive $20 million along with the public apology.

In July, Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit accusing then-Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes of sexual harassment.

Ailes has denied Carlson’s allegations, but Fox confirmed their accuracy and delivered what was, for the combative network, an unusual public apology.

In a statement today, Carlson said: “I’m ready to move on to the next chapter of my life in which I will redouble my efforts to empower women in the workplace”.

“I want to thank all the fearless women who came forward to tell their own stories and the many people across the country who embraced and supported me”, she said.

Greta Van Susteren has abruptly quit after 14 years as a prime-time anchor at Fox News Channel, saying that Fox “has not felt like home to me for a few years”. But anyone who knows anything about how the world works won’t be too shocked to know that Fox settled on Roger Ailes’ behalf in the Gretchen Carlson case, Reuters reports. She claims that her time with the network, “devolved into a nightmare of sexual harassment”.

Starting Tuesday, she’s being temporarily replaced in her 7 p.m. ET time slot by Fox veteran Brit Hume, at least through the election. And 21st Century Fox, controlled by billionaire mogul Rupert Murdoch, also has settled other claims, the person said.

For nearly 20 years, Mr Ailes was the top dog as his channel posted annual profits of hundreds of millions of dollars, and transformed the cable news landscape, which had been dominated by CNN.

The settlement was announced by parent company 21st Century Fox, which didn’t include the terms.

She did not immediately return requests for comment. Fox mainstay Bill O’Reilly, who turns 67 on Saturday, has mused publicly about the idea of retirement, and it’s unclear how Ailes’ departure will affect him.

NY magazine reported last week that Carlson began taking her iPhone into meetings with Ailes in 2014 and secretly recording their conversations. He built it into a dominant news network and a force in Republican politics.
