Gretchen Carlson case against Ailes a cultural/media/workplace flashpoint

Carlson alleged that she was demoted and let go from Fox after she refused Ailes’ sexual advances and complained about workplace harassment.

Word of the surprise shake-up in what has been cable TV news’ most stable and successful lineup was announced only minutes after the settlement of former Fox anchor Gretchen Carlson’s harassment lawsuit against deposed Fox News chief Roger Ailes.

“I am gratified that 21st Century Fox took decisive action after I filed my Complaint”.

“[New York Magazine’s parent company] New York Media and Gabriel Sherman were contacted by Charles Harder on behalf of Roger and Elizabeth Ailes, asking that we preserve documents related to the Ailes, for a possible defamation claim”, a spokesperson for New York Magazine told Fortune in an emailed statement. Ailes resigned in July after Fox investigated Carlson’s claims. He received a $US40 million settlement when he left.

Also of note is that the apology came from Fox News’s corporate parent, not the famously pugnacious news organization itself. One source described it as a financial disagreement.

On Tuesday Van Susteren took to Facebook to explain her exit. During her tenure at Fox News, Gretchen exhibited the highest standards of journalism and professionalism.

The company made no indication why Van Susteren was departing or if she was heading to another network. David Folkenflik of NPR News, thanks very much.

While the swift settlement of the Carlson lawsuit potentially removes a cloud that has been hanging over Fox News for investors, there still are questions about whether more talent will depart because Ailes is no longer there, said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research Group.

Asked about why Van Susteren had exercised the key man clause, Coale said, “There’s more than meets the eye” and that there “might be litigation in the future” so he did not want to talk further.

Brit Hume will now host her show “On the Record” at the 7PM time slot starting on Tuesday and through the election.

No statement was provided by Van Susteren.

Earlier this summer, longtime correspondent Gretchen Carlson sued Fox CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment and gender-based discrimination.

The former Miss America spent several years on the “Fox & Friends” morning show before being shifted to the afternoon and told in June that her contract wasn’t being renewed.

Hume said, “I am happy to take on this assignment for the balance of this extraordinary election”.
