‘Grey’s Anatomy’: 11 Cringeworthy Moments from ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’

“Grey’s Anatomy” season 12 episode 6, titled “The Me Nobody Knows” will see Penny (Samantha Sloyan) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) clash heads as they are forced to work together on a patient, even after the disastrous dinner party that happened in the previous episode.
We end tonight’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy season 12 off with Maggie talking to Andrew while they are still waiting for the other OBGYN to see her. Stephanie and Jo are getting through the rough patch after and then Jo says something about understanding her more, but Stephanie takes this as an insult and tells Jo off and leaves. As executive producer Debbie Allen told Entertainment Weekly, “it’s very difficult” for Meredith to have Penny there. It’s odd that the storytelling here seems to throw a little shade Maggie’s way for wanting to make sure she was safe and healthy after a sexual encounter – like she should’ve just trusted Douchebeard? Everyone else is basically oblivious to the tension and excited to meet Penny – even Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), who has managed to chug an entire bottle of wine by the time Callie and Penny show up. It’s still unclear whether Arizona is jealous of or crushing on Penny (“Find a Penny, pick it up!” she drunkenly quips), but as Penny’s work history starts to reveal itself, Meredith can’t contain herself any longer. There’s Meredith and Amelia, screaming at each other because Amelia has space to breakdown and Meredith has three (invisible) kids to raise.
Furthermore, Penny’s presence had Meredith off balance. “Perfect Penny killed my husband”, Meredith announces bitterly, before leaving the room. Several moments tipped the scale far above a 10, but Grey’s Anatomy has a way of bringing everyone back down to Earth after their emotions get the better of them. She kept having to pee at Meredith’s dinner party and then she rushed to the emergency room, which was probably for the best because she totally missed the Penny bomb that was dropped at dinner.
But Callie was not back in time for dinner.
Arizona was drunk so she took to calling Penny “Perfect Penny” and eventually Penny’s full name rang a bell with Bailey. Penny was about to join the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital family and when Meredith heard that – she snapped.
Meanwhile, Meredith has sequestered herself in the bathroom upstairs, dry-heaving and having flashbacks to the night Derek died. Penny sputters that the hospital was understaffed, and she should have insisted that he get a Connecticut, and Amelia continues her interrogation until Callie puts a stop to it – but not before ordering Penny out of the house.
Amelia made Penny tell the whole story. But her panic attack is interrupted by a UTI-plagued Maggie, and then by Amelia, who’s frantically looking for her co-hosts.
But it is Meredith’s time to fall apart.
Meredith loved Derek just as much as Amelia. Her first day at the hospital will be on Meredith’s service and Amelia is ready to rage war to get her gone. Meredith flips out telling her that she lost her husband and the father of her children and Amelia is the one falling apart?
But dinner came to an abrupt end.
There’s also a fascinating few moments between Stephanie and Jo, in the wake of Jo telling on Stephanie for “lying” about her sickle cell anemia last week. So she didn’t try to find excuses, she just apologized and Stephanie accepted her apology.
