Put another way: The writers (and director Denzel Washington) knew that viewers don’t care about exactly what happens to Meredith as much as they care about whether she’s going to be OK.

After almost three months off the air, Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 returns tomorrow night for TGIT on ABC and it is going to be an intense one! Don’t get me wrong: Yes, Meredith is attacked by a patient (who is in a post-seizure state and doesn’t know what he’s doing).
Okay, fine. You can be a long-time fan of Grey’s and still ask yourself, “Why do all of these awful things happen to Meredith?”. Apparently, she can not hear what everyone around her was saying.
Credit Meredith’s dark and twistiness with the time she was a child and saw her mother slit her wrists – all because her married lover, Richard, left her.
Then she’s in a completely understandable funk following a visit from Amelia (who made Mer’s attack all about herself), when Webber wheels his surrogate daughter outside while singing “My Girl”, which is a highlight of the entire series. Dr. Webber (James Pickens, Jr.) interrupted the procedure, telling Maggie (Kelly McCreary) that she can’t operate on Meredith as she is family. Greys 12×08 marks a step forward in the Avery-Kepner split, and it seems the writers will see this through.
As noted by Sarah Drew (April) in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, episode 9 is Meredith-centric episode. We hear they will be the focus of the February 25 episode.

By the time she could speak again, Meredith then turned to Alex and lectured him on how he should be with Jo (Camilla Luddington) because it’s quite obvious how much Jo loves him.

Amelia tells Meredith off and Meredith kicks Amelia out of her home. Perhaps the impact would not have been as strong, if she had not acted petty and shallow when Mer called for a consult prior to the attack. At this point, we don’t know if she’s said yes. “Get ready to have your guts feel like they’re coming out of you, because it is truly harrowing”, she said during the recent Television Critics Association winter press tour. Will the two reconcile for good? Although the story of Meredith’s attack will be dominating the next few episodes, other events around the hospital will seemingly be addressed in Episode 10. And please bring Denzel back to direct another episode. Now that Meredith can talk, she ends the episode by pointing out how important it is to say something when you have a chance, because you may not always have that chance. Karev, Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and Maggie are the central doctors in the medical case of the week.
