“I have to mention Portugal because it was the first in their history”.

“I’m obviously delighted to receive this award, and it’s been an incredible season”. The title holder is announced during the UEFA Award Ceremony.

Ronaldo played 48 games in all competitions for Real last season, scoring 51 goals and assisting a further 15 strikes. The icing on the top of the cake was his performance in the Champions League when he had an astounding 16 goals in 12 matches to power his club towards winning the trophy.

As well as Borussia Dortmund and Legia Warsaw, Real Madrid were drawn against Sporting, the club at which Ronaldo started his career, in the Champions League group stage and the 32-year-old is looking forward to an emotional return when the two clubs meet.

After the UEFA Champions draw, there was still more business to attend to, as UEFA would hand out its player of the year award. I work hard myself but without the help of my team-mates this would not be possible.

“Of course, I feel happy because it was an unbelievable season”, Ronaldo said. “But it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t mention these two wonderful players [Bale and Griezmann]”. He can sleep easy tonight knowing he is the best player in Europe this year.
