Grown Christmas Trees: A Million-Dollar Business

This weekend hundreds of families headed to St. Joe Christmas Tree Farm in search of the flawless tree.

Artificial trees also have the potential to cause unwanted sneezing, especially if the tree has been stored since the previous winter season.

“That’s what I always had growing up so we wanted to get one”, adds Larm.

So, grab a saw and get cutting.

“There are indoor and outdoor lights make sure you are using the outdoor lights outdoors and indoor lights indoors we you are putting up your lights outdoors make sure you use clips that are made for hanging lights don’t use nails”, says Harris.

“They drag the tree back up to the front. We’ll cut it for them if they choose”, said Doles. They typically would sell over 240 or more.

But so many things in life are a tradeoff.

“If you and your children don’t have any obvious allergies, then it is probably not going to bother you”, Kurlandsky said.

Glass says the farm has been there 25 years, and as he enters his 10th year there, he says a living tree remains a popular tradition.

“On the farm we have Scotch pine, White pine, and Canaan fir, and those we can cut down”.

In Florida, you’ll find sand pines, Southern red cedars and Carolina sapphires.

If it is, you might need to get a new tree.

Trees can’t be cut down in the following areas– campgrounds, at trail heads, designated wilderness areas, developed recreation sites, posted timber sale spots, recently planted areas, or within 50 feet of any lake, stream or wetland. They ride the little train trolley.

You might even see some turkeys who survived Thanksgiving.

Glass says it takes around seven years for a tree to reach Christmas-sale-size, so a drought year has lingering effects on the business.
