The GST Bill, which is hanging fire for several years, is likely to be approved by the Rajya Sabha as the government has listed the Bill under this week’s agenda for consideration.
BJP on Monday issued a whip to its members asking them to be present in the House for the next three days as the party expects the legislation to be passed on Wednesday.
“The GST bill is listed for Wednesday”. She will be away campaigning in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency in Uttar Pradesh, which votes in assembly elections early next year.
The bill was originally scheduled for being taken up on Tuesday but senior Congress leaders are in UP for a rally.
The benefits under the government’s flagship program “Make in India” should continue to enjoy patronage under the GST regime, the body said, adding that businesses have made substantial investments and also given that fruition of such schemes is realized over a period of time.
To beef up its stand, the main opposition party has quoted rules that that the government needs to circulate the bill with amendments among all lawmakers to give them time to study it before the discussion. “Until then, it will be hard to say what demands the government has accepted”. The objections of the Congress have been accommodated in last week’s changes to the proposal.
“GST Bill must be passed but it must be a practically implementable GST which you and me and 125 crore people will not regret of having passed including the members of parliament”, he said.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said last week that no final assurance on the bill has been given to the government either by Congress or other opposition parties.
