GTS concept previews new track-bred BMW M4
BMW is showcasing new technologies on a concept version of the first special edition M4 coupe, which it showed last week.

On Friday, BMW decided it couldn’t wait any longer to announce to fans that the BMW M4 would finally be hitting the shores here in the US, in the form of a limited run model called the BMW Concept M4 GTS.
Well, BMW has finally ended all of the rumors with the reveal of the M4 GTS concept at this week’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
The M4 GTS Concept is, as we expected, a hardcore version of the regular M4. Although the German automaker is billing it as a concept, it looks more than production ready and don’t be surprised when the production model debuts and doesn’t stray very far from what you see here.
BMW Group design senior vice-president Adrian van Hooydonk said: “Motor racing is all about the ability of cars to mesmerise, about the unbridled joy of driving”.
Of course, extreme care must be taken, as should the water not be evaporated sufficiently, it will enter the combustion chamber with potentially catastrophic results, however the system has been tested in the M4 BMW uses as a MotoGP safety auto. Speaking of the wheels, they measure 9.5×19 inches up front and 10.5×20 inches round the back wrapped in Micheling Sport Cup 2 tyres. This creates higher boost pressure, and allows for earlier injection timing. In the middle is a carbon fibre double diffuser system that comes straight from racing auto technology.
The M4 GTS also has OLED rear lights, which will come to production BMWs this year. The one for the turbocharger has an indirect intercooler which is assisted by the electric water pump.
Compared to the standard BMW M4 Coupe, the M4 GTS study features performance-focused design elements such as the manually adjustable front splitter and rear wing – both in exposed carbon. Already a nod to the CSL road vehicle, a wood-like panel encircles the dashboard, but here displays the track layout and other data on its surface.
All indicators suggest that the M4 GTS will be every bit as good as the 2010 M3 GTS, with the benefit of more power and better cooling.
What we don’t know is how much all these tech advancements have affected horsepower and torque figures, not to mention price.

A strip of LEDs extend along the spoiler to link the two lights and provide a stylistic border for the rear end.
