‘Guccifer 2.0’ claims credit for DNC hack

On his website, Guccifer 2.0 posted some of the documents allegedly lifted from DNC’s servers, such as a 200-page “opposition research” document on Donald Trump. The original Guccifer is a Romanian man who hacked high-profile USA government accounts and claimed to have hacked Hillary Clinton’s private email server. But he certainly wasn’t the last.

Hackers allegedly gained access to the DNC network previous year, but were purged from the system in just the last few days.

Earlier in the week, the security firm Crowdstrike, which the DNC brought in to remediate the breach, published a blog post claiming that a pair of hacker groups based in Russian Federation and associated with the government’s intelligence apparatus carried out the intrusion.

On the campaign trail, Trump has followed his attack on a federal judge’s Mexican heritage by doubling down on his Muslim ban and accusing American Muslims of knowing of terrorist plots and concealing them from law enforcement.

Gawker reports that they received the document from a hacker calling himself Guccifer 2.0, a reference to “Guccifer”, the moniker for the Romanian hacker who claims to have breached Hillary Clinton’s private email server.

“Reporter Outreach: Working through the DNC and others, we should use background briefings, prep with reporters for interviews with GOP candidates, off-the-record conversations and oppo pitches to help pitch stories with no fingerprints and utilize reporters to drive a message”, the document says.

The posting come a day after the DNC acknowledged that it had been hacked and a cyber firm investigating the breach said it was the work of the Russian government. Other Excel files claim to include other donor information as well as attendance information for fundraisers. Shame on CrowdStrike: Do you think I’ve been in the DNC’s networks for nearly a year and saved only 2 documents? “F– CrowdStrike!” the hacker wrote. We have yet to verify this claim.

“The goal of such intelligence gathering is to understand the target’s proclivities”, said Robert Deitz, former senior councillor to the CIA director and a former general counsel at the National Security Agency.

But more interesting than the document’s content is the motive of the Russian hackers and what it means-or doesn’t, in a time when state-on-state data breaches are the norm-for the geopolitical sphere. The document is interesting as it lays out in plain language what Obama planned to do, however, the document cites only public speeches and documents released by the Obama campaign and the Organizing for Action committee he set up after he won the election.

Luis Miranda, DNC communications director, and Mark Paustenbach, the DNC national press secretary, would not say if the document is authentic.

The hacker then went on to embed links to eleven documents on the page, while also saying he gave thousands of files and emails to WikiLeaks, who’ll be publishing them shortly. Fuck the Illuminati and their conspiracies!
