Gugu Mbatha-Raw Lands Role in ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’

Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who starred in the early season of Doctor Who’s reboot and Wachowski sci-fi dud Jupiter Ascending, has been reportedly cast in an unspecified role by Rian Johnson.

It’s no surprise that literally nothing is known about her character.

Well that was quick – just a few days after rumors surfaced that British actress Gugu Mbawtha- Raw was on the shortlist for Star Wars: Episode VIII, we have our first “confirmed” report. We hope that’s true, both because we could always use more female roles and because it would be disappointing if Maslany lost out on another Star Wars role. Or perhaps she’s scooped up a new role altogether, and Episode VIII is just replete with kick-ass actresses. The actor appeared in the critically lauded Attack the Block in 2011, and demonstrated leading actor chops as a teenager.

Honestly, any of the three women would have been ideal for a part in the franchise – they’re three of our faves after all – but we can not wait to see Gugu in her biggest movie yet! The film, which has already starting filming in Ireland, previously cast Benicio Del Toro for a villainous role with recent reports also suggesting that, after whatever happens in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens, at least one familiar face will be returning.

Without giving away a single spoiler, Johnson tweeted the Star Wars: Episode VIII script cover page featuring the temporary film title, his name, and absolutely nothing else.
