Guilty will not be spared: Siddharth Nath Singh on BHU violence
For the uninitiated, a molestation incident sparked the protest in BHU campus, resulting in police crackdown on girl students. And it gets worse from here. Terming the “gender discrimination” issue in the campus as an allegation, he said that the institution does not have gender discrimination and because of the measures taken, girl students do not need to go the cyber library as WiFi is available in the hostel.

They have criticised Tripathi for calling the police and for forcibly closing down all the hostels for arts, science and commerce students till October 2. “There is quick assistance if anyone raises the alarm. She fell to the ground”, the acquaintance said. The incident is unfortunate. The girls protested in the campus.
“We have asked the administration for initiating a dialogue with the students through the vice-chancellor and a decision to set up close circuit TV cameras there had been taken”, said Sharma.
Girish Chandra Tripathi, a former RSS man, has come under fire after the incident.
According to the report, the biggest fault in this case is that of the administration and such a controversy would not have taken place had they handled the matter appropriately.
In November 2009, police had used lathis to disperse a crowd protesting against the molestation of a female student within the campus. The letter had details of the incidents where the girls had to suffer. The administration also registered a FIR against 1,000 BHU students in Lanka police station for arson on Monday. Apart from sexual crimes against the women on the campus, a man was allegedly gangraped in a moving auto for hours, with neither the police nor the campus patrol detecting any wrongdoing. He would have jumped out of his bed, just as the father of the girl who became a victim of stalking on the Chandigarh streets one recent night did. Women say they feel unsafe at the market.
The Commission observed that the contents of the media reports, carried on September 25-26, are indicative of “lapses on the part of the university authorities, including the security guards, who instead of taking quick action on the complaint of eve-teasing, allegedly indulged in sarcastic comments towards the victim girl”. Inside the hostels, girls were threatened and blackmailed by the administration. Sometimes we are asked questions even if we want to go out of out of our hostels at 6 pm. But the guard did not tell anything to the goons. As the students shouted slogans outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office, police entered the premises to beat students and detained several students.

“We would encounter harassment on a daily basis and be numb about it. We can not assign a guard to every student”. “It is sheer hypocrisy”, she added. I am glad students are now raising their voice. “I felt helpless and cried throughout the night”.
