Sahbi Jouini, a member of the policemen’s union, said the men opened fire with a rifle on three policeman, killing one and injuring the other two.

A Tunisian policeman was shot dead on Wednesday (Aug 19) by two assailants on a motorbike in the coastal resort of Sousse where a militant gunman killed 38 tourists in June, a senior security official said. “An investigation is under way”.

The targeted policemen were waiting by the side of the road for a ride to a town in central Tunisia, according to the television.

This is the same area where 30 British tourists were killed on the beach in June of this year in another terror attack.

Tunisia turned its attention to reviving its economy after it completed a transition from the dictatorship of Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, who was ousted in a 2011 uprising, to a democracy with free elections and a new constitution.

The gunmen in the Sousse attack and the Bardo Museum were trained in militant camps in Libya, but officials and family say they were radicalised by militant groups at home through local mosques or contacts on the internet.
