Deputies responded to calls of gunfire at about 3:15 p.m.at Maple Cove Baptist Church, Bill Miller, Haywood County sheriff’s department spokesperson confirmed.
According to the sheriff’s office, law enforcement and the man shot at each other.
There was no one inside the church at the time shots were fired.
It’s not clear right now whether shots were fired inside or outside the church, but authorities say gunfire was exchanged with law enforcement. No law enforcement officer was injured. No officers have been hurt, but the condition of the man – who was reportedly injured – was unclear.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was also called to the scene, but they did not provide any further information.
“He was secured and being treated by EMS”, Warren said of the man after the stand-off.
