Ross added that officers uncovered a note at the scene of the shooting that said the gunman hated police and probation officers, according to CNN.

Sources say the male officer was shot in the hand and that the woman was shot several times directly into her vest while sitting in her patrol auto.

The gunman was killed in the shootout, though he managed to injure Officer Eddie Miller of the University of Pennsylvania Police, who is now also in the hospital in stable condition.

The mayhem began just on 11.20 pm in the district of Walnut Hill, west Philadelphia when Glenn walked up to Sgt Sylvia Young’s patrol auto and blasted 15 gunshots through an open window, with eight bullets striking the woman. Two occupants, a man and a 25-year-old woman, were hit in the chest. The suspect also wounded a University of Pennsylvania police officer before he was shot in an alley by other officers. Both were in stable condition Saturday.

Although Galent apparently did not know Young, he was “clearly trying to assassinate her”, Ross said.

Then the suspect shot her in the leg and resumed running east on Sansom. The woman died and the man is expected to survive, he said.

Ross referred to the January 7 shooting in Philadelphia of officer Jesse Hartnett, who was ambushed as he sat in his cruiser at an intersection.

Mayor Jim Kenney told ABC-affiliate WPTV that the injured officers were awake and conscious when he visited them early Saturday.

Four officers being shot in one night, including two allegedly targeted just over the Delaware River, prompted reactions from many South Jersey law enforcement authorities.

“All in all, it was a really bad, scary night”, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said.

“All in all, it was a bad scary night”, Kenney said.

The note expressed hatred toward law enforcement and named a probation officer. He said Ed Miller, a former police officer who is now a member of the police.

Philadelphia’s police commissioner says a man who shot and killed a woman and wounded five other people, including two police officers, committed “one of the most violent acts that we’ve seen in Philadelphia in a long time”.

The shooter’s motives were not entirely clear, and police have not mentioned the race of anyone involved.

Ross reportedly said that Sgt. Sylvia Young, 46, was sitting in his cruiser at 52nd and Sansom when the gunman approached and began firing – all without saying a word.

The alleged gunman in Hartnett’s shooting, Edward Archer, now 31, of Yeadon, later confessed to police that he had carried out the shooting “in the name of Islam” and said he had sworn allegiance to ISIS, authorities have said.

Indiana Governor and Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence tweeted Saturday morning at 10:30, also sending thoughts and prayers and thanking the officers for their service.
