The shooting came at a time of heightened unease in Israel and Palestinian territories, with a recent wave of violence that has included stabbings and other kinds of attacks on civilians and Israeli soldiers. “Both directions are being investigated”.
The gunman was believed to be a 29-year-old Israeli Arab from the north of the country, identified as an Islamist sympathiser. Media reports that the shooter’s father is a police volunteer and a security guard. The suspect himself also has a criminal past and was known to security authorities. Subsequently, the suspect struggled with depression, according to his family.

It was unclear if Friday’s attack was related to ongoing tensions in the region.
Ayman Odeh, who heads the Joint List that groups the main Arab parties in parliament, said that “while not all the details of the incident are clear yet”, he “sharply and clearly” condemned any attack on innocent people. During his interrogation, he said that he wanted to avenge his cousin’s death. A massive police manhunt for the gunman has so far drawn a blank.
“We know he was being treated for mental [issues]”, the relative said. They condemned the attack and called on him to turn himself in.
Ben-David said the shooter’s calm demeanour and the way he was holding and shooting the gun show he was well trained. In camera footage of the attack, the gunman was seen pulling his weapon from a backpack and aiming the rifle at passersby and at pub patrons. “Some of the wounded were inside the pub and others lying in the street”.
Another witness at a nearby cafe told Ma’ariv: “It was a quiet Friday, I was complaining that my sandwich was late”.
Avi, another eyewitness, said he heard about 10 shots. “I remember what happened in Paris”. She and her companions saw a man with a weapon rush around the corner as they hit the ground, then a minute later they fled inside.
One of those killed in the shooting was Alon Backal, a law student who worked at the bar.
Late on Friday, gunmen in the Gaza Strip fired two rockets at Israel causing no injuries or damage, the Israeli military said.
