Ford allegedly was working at the Excel Industries plant when he abruptly left and later returned in a truck that wasn’t his, armed with an AK-47 and a handgun. He was killed in an exchange of gunfire with the first police officer to reach the scene.

Overall, the three shootings covered a range of about 6 miles and lasted a span of about 24 minutes, Walton said Friday. He said the victims appear to have been randomly targeted.

Jim Mason, Hesston College’s director of facilities, says faculty and staff are being kept indoors as a precaution until it’s clear a suspect is in custody.

He then entered the building and unleashed bullets.

Ford had bought a truck from Jarrell’s neighbor a week before and drove the truck to work for the first time Thursday, Jarrell said.

At Excel in Hesston, Ford goes to the northeast section of the plant.
