Union Minister of State for Labour & Employment Bandaru Dattatraya here on Saturday strongly condemned the attempted terror attack on Pathankot Air Force Base early this morning.
Pathankot: A major operation to secure an Indian air force base attacked by suspected Islamist militants has ended, police said Saturday, 14 hours after gunmen wearing army uniforms infiltrated the installation in northern Punjab state.
At least one helicopter could be seen firing at an area inside the Pathankot air force base.
The terrorists could not go beyond the “langar” (eating place) near the outer perimeter of the IAF complex as the security forces were ready to take them on, officials said about the operation which was supervised directly by Doval. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
The Saturday attack, security official said, resembled another terror attack which was carried out in July past year, in which armed men in army fatigues stormed a Dinanagar police station in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, killing six people.
The Home Minister said there were intelligence inputs about possible terror attacks in Punjab and steps were taken which helped avert higher casualties.
The attack comes after some ice had melted between nuclear-armed nations India and Pakistan, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promptly visited Lahore for some hours, to attend Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s granddaughter’s wedding.
The two countries made a decision to start a dialogue process to resolve outstanding issues, with the foreign secretaries of both countries scheduled to meet in Islamabad later this month.
“At this point, there’s sufficient goodwill in India-Pakistan relations to weather this attack”.
Department dealing with the foreign affairs stated that Pakistan is willing to collaborate with India for a common cause of weeding-out extremism.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated that India wants peace with its neighbor, Pakistan.
IAF was using its two attack helicopters to assist the joint team of ground troops to neutralise the remaining terrorists, the sources said.
Meanwhile, SD College which is also located near Air Force Base station postponed the exams in the wake of terror attack. “These kinds of attacks are nothing new and have generally been the outcome of the dispute of India and Pakistan over Kashmir”, stated Noor Ahmed Baba, a political scientist at Central College in Indian Kashmir’s capital, Srinagar.
