Guptill destroys Sri Lanka bowlers
The Black Caps have thrashed Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the second one-day match in Christchurch, with opening batsman Martin Guptill hitting the fastest half century in New Zealand cricket history – off just 17 balls.

But Sri Lanka tightened up their bowling to Guptill, whose 50 came up with a single to mid-wicket from the 17th ball he faced to beat by one ball skipper Brendon McCullum’s New Zealand record. Guptill had been on course to break AB de Villiers’ record – fifty in 16 balls – when he moved to 46 off 12 deliveries.
Matt Henry (4-33) and Mitchell McClenaghan (3-32) did the damage early, with Sri Lanka dismissed for just 117.
The hosts have taken a 1-0 lead in the series with a seven-wicket victory in the first match that was also played at the same venue.
“It was good to have Adam bowling well at the other end and creating pressure”, said Henry, who finished with 4-49.
Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews was disappointed the way his side folded in the Tests but expected a better showing in the limited overs series.
“We’ve got a bumper calendar really with Sri Lanka here at the moment, Pakistan to come and finishing off with the Aussies”, he said.
In a 25-ball stay at the crease, McCullum smacked 11 fours and one six to have Sri Lanka on the ropes before he departed with New Zealand only needing a further 81 runs in 40 overs.
Ish Sodhi took a wicket with Dushmantha Chameera (9), with Nuwan Kulasekara (19) the last to go for the Sri Lankans.
New Zealand is also missing several big names, with Corey Anderson, James Neesham and Grant Elliott out with injuries, while Trent Boult and Tim Southee, its two strike bowlers, have been rested for the initial half of the series.
Sri Lanka were in disarray at 27-5 inside 10 overs on Boxing Day, the collapse was even more acute on Monday as they at least used 47 overs in game one.
Sri Lanka won the toss and put New Zealand in to bat in the opening one-day global in Christchurch on Saturday.
Siriwardana averted the hat-trick, but Henry induced a nick from Dinesh Chandimal which was gobbled up by Ross Taylor at first slip in his next over.
“I thought Mitchell McClenaghan and Doug Bracewell were outstanding as well”.

After being crushed by seven wickets in the primary recreation at Hagley Oval, the place exclusively a ninety eight-run seventh wicket stand between Milinda Siriwardana and Nuwan Kulasekara saved them from complete humiliation, coach Jerome Jayaratne issued a public apology.
