The Blues skipper, who has been at the club for more than 20 years, made the shock announcement on Sunday that he had been informed Chelsea would not be renewing his contract next season.

John Terry could yet end his career as a Chelsea player, according to interim manager Guus Hiddink.

Hiddink had previously said he would recommend that Chelsea should offer Terry a new contract and the Dutchman is still of the opinion that the former England captain is not in decline.

Chelsea are yet to appoint a manager to guide them through next season with Hiddink set to leave after his spell in charge following Jose Mourinho’s sacking.

‘He is entitled to his decision after his contract ends – at the end of the season he can make up his mind. “The club still want to have the dialogue and to have an open door still”.

“It was a bit surprising but he is completely entitled to do so”.

“There was no specific decision made”.

“There’s always been that element because of the amount of competitions we are in, and number of games you play. I was in last week before the Arsenal game and it’s not going to be extended”, Terry explained, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

He has won every major club honour since making his debut as a 17-year-old in October 1998, including four Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, the Europa League and the Champions League in 2012.

“I like very much the way he’s playing and that he’s committed to the team”.

“John’s statistics, not just that but also the view we have on him, I have on him, he’s very fit”, said Hiddink. That’s all I can say about this.

Terry can expect a rousing reception in Wednesday’s Premier League clash at Watford and Sunday’s home contest with Manchester United.

“He is very fit and he is not what you normally see from a 35-year-old player”.

“It’s still early. The door is not shut”. My performance isn’t going to change, the way I train, what I give for the club. ‘I am convinced because we also talked about this issue’. “He is a fantastic servant of Chelsea Football Club and a superb captain and, as such, the club will keep the channels of dialogue open”, the spokesperson added.

Cahill has played more than 170 games for Chelsea but has made only 12 league appearances this season as Kurt Zouma and John Terry have become preferred starters
