The news was revealed during NBC’s session at this year’s Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles. The deal is not yet confirmed, however.
Network head Bob Greenblatt announced Wednesday morning that NBC is working to nab the rights to Hairspray, the beloved musical following Tracy Turnblad and her desire to be a performer in Baltimore, Maryland.
Hairspray the musical opened on Broadway in August 2002 and features music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman.

The live presentation, set for December, is again to be executive produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who have produced all the NBC live musical productions thus far. The trio received Tony Awards for their performances. The film, which featured John Travolta, Christopher Walken (who also starred in Peter Pan), Zac Efron and then-newcomer Nikki Blonsky, grossed $120 million stateside.
