Haiti finds case of microcephaly linked to Zika virus

“The case will be classified as “travel-associated” and is being investigated for more details”, the Texas health department said in a statement. Cases have been reported in 35 of Florida’s 67 counties, including Manatee County which has two travel-related infections. Symptoms of Zika are similar to other viruses spread through mosquito bites, like dengue and chikungunya.

Symptoms of Zika include fever, joint pain, a rash and red eyes that can last about one week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The DPH is also encouraging anyone who may be traveling to Zika-affected regions including certain areas of Florida, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Pacific Islands, and USA territories to take strict precautions against being bitten by mosquitoes.

Snyder’s report details the planning and active local response for the County Health Department, including medical community outreach, routine testing of patients.

According to the Alabama Department of Health, the state as a whole has 25 identified cases of the virus.

“We dont know so much about this disease that we can say the person who gets it at 32 weeks is not at risk but the person who gets it at 12 weeks is really in trouble.”.

According to a chart provided by the Centers for Disease Control, Haiti has recorded almost 3,000 Zika cases. The Texas health department said the county had no other evidence of the virus or local transmission. It is most risky to pregnant women, due to the virus’ link to microcephaly, a devastating birth defect where babies are born with too-small heads and underdeveloped brains.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are the primary carrier of Zika in South America, and Pennsylvania officials say not one of these has been collected since 2002 in-state. Resendes said the man has since recovered.

With Zika, the biggest concern with travel to a Zika-affected area is for women who are pregnant, and couples who are planning a pregnancy, since Zika virus can cause serious birth defects. “For people who are symptomatic, they need to be seen by a healthcare provider”. That dire warning was initially made in June, as health officials noted the disease was spreading at previously unexpected speeds. “They look for mosquito breeding sites-very small amounts of standing water are enough for these mosquitos to lay eggs-and provide education on how residents can protect themselves by using EPA registered repellent, covering skin with clothing and ensuring window and door screens are intact”. They can breed in a capful of water or corrugations of irrigation pipe if water stands for a few days.
