Haley: Armed officers to likely guard military installations

“We hold this position for many reasons”, Army Lt. Col. Valerie Henderson, a Pentagon spokeswoman told the Military Times earlier this week.

Governor Pence announced the details of the executive order regarding the new policy Sunday with leaders from the Indiana National Guard by his side.

Six other states, including Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Utah and Florida will also allow their guard to be armed.

In addition to the Adjutant General’s review, Governor Haslam directed Commissioner Gibbons to evaluate the process for obtaining handgun carry permits for members of the military who have received appropriate training.

The new policy started Monday morning and only impacts the state’s national guard facilities.

“They have the leeway to implement additional security measures as they see fit”, she said.

The shooting prompted governors in at least a half-dozen states to authorize National Guardsmen to take up arms to protect recruiting offices and installations.

The National Guard in seven USA states is being armed with firearms following the killing of five guardsmen at a training center in Chattanooga, Tennessee last week. Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez is accused of shooting a total of seven people before being shot and killed by police.

“It doesn’t mean everybody now should be armed – I’m not for that”, Klinker said.

Counterterrorism investigators, meanwhile, continued to interview acquaintances of Abdulazeez and delve into his months-long visit to Jordan past year, looking for clues to who or what might have influenced him and set off the bloodshed.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Gov. Terry Branstad is asking the Iowa National Guard to review security at its facilities in Iowa, in the wake of last week’s shooting in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In the past, there have been several other cases where military personnel have been killed at military facilities.

Mississippi National Guard recruiters work in nine stand-alone recruiting offices, on college campuses and at Community Readiness Centers around the state. He’ll make that request during a meeting this week in Washington for a group of governors who advise federal officials on security matters.

As a result of the shooting at Chattanooga Armed Forces recruitment centers, Governor Nikki Haley and Major General Bob Livingston, are working together with law enforcement to ensure the safety of service members.
