Three Aiken County students have been named semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

They are Elizabeth M. Chittenden, Darby T. Dayton, Elisse Friedman, Barbara Garrison, Kylie E. Hefner, Matthew A. Kennedy, Emma L. Parsons from MIra Costa High School and Amber N. Ray, who was home schooled.
More that 1.6 million juniors were in the running to be semi-finalists from some 22,000 high schools.
Semifinalists have the opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships.
The two are among about 16,000 semifinalists competing for about 7,500 scholarships worth a total of about $33 million.
Local semifinalists include Michaela Lonski, Ellen Robison and Charlotte Utschig from Wauwatosa East High School and Adam Fendos, Max Herteen, Simon Ng, Richard Sear and Noah Suchy from Wauwatosa West High School.

To become a finalist, the semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.

“Only 1 percent of students nationwide achieve National Merit semi-finalist status”, Coberly said in a statement. The 2017 winners will be announced from April-July.
