Halloween lasts an extra hour this year
Here’s what you need to know about the time change this weekend and the ongoing debate over whether to get rid of the practice.

The tradition goes back to more than a hundred years. Here’s the scoop this weekend’s time change that happens just hours after all the ghosts and goblins finish up their trick-or-treating on Halloween. “We should take advantage of this unique opportunity to spend one more hour in bed, one more hour in sleep”.
So, however you choose to enjoy your extra hour, make sure you stay safe.
So we spring forward or fall back, grumble and bumble a little, and then carry on with our lives like the good citizens we are. Saskatchewan hasn’t followed Daylight Savings since the 1960s, and parts of Nunavut and Quebec do not observe the time change as well.
Dieno is asking that the government remain on one time year-round, preferably Daylight Saving Time. It is also not observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. A number of other states have attempted to pass bills to end it, but they’ve failed.
But it’s not, according to Prerau, whose 2009 book “Seize the Daylight” traces the history of the time shift. After World War II, it was up to individual states in the U.S.to decide whether or not they wanted to use it. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 established consistent start and end dates.
The proposal to extend Daylight Savings was lauded by retailers, such as the gold industry, who told a 1986 U.S. Congressional hearing that one extra month could boost sales by as much as $400 million.
“Most of the rise in crime occurs during weekdays, when commute times are concentrated around evening hours that are suddenly much darker”, says Sanders.
Daylight Saving Time was originally created to make use of extra sunlight hours and cut down on energy costs.
As Alberta goes off of Daylight Savings Time, Fort St. John will be on the same time as Calgary – in the Mountain Standard Time Zone. Older people may end up struggling more with the time change, but it could have an effect on virtually everyone.
“General consensus is that really most of those things that were used as arguments for having Daylight Saving Time in the past are really not applicable nowadays”, he said.

All of these winter-ready tasks and semi-annual home improvements might not sound like fun, but taking care of them while making it through the antiquated concept of Daylight Saving Time could help you get all of the unpleasantness out of the way at once.
