Set a specific time for your child/children to be out and if possible a specific route.

With more children expected to be on neighbourhood streets throughout B.C. this weekend attending parties and trick-or-treating on Monday, ICBC is asking drivers to slow down, be extra careful and expect the unexpected, especially on residential roads. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the grass away from the street. If driving children to a Halloween event, let them enter and exit the auto only from the curb side of the vehicle.

Light the area well so the young visitors can see where they are going.

Don’t allow children to eat treats until a responsible grownup examines them first.

Costumes come in all shapes, sizes and colors and Reynolds said they should have reflective material on them or be light in color.

Dress your children in appropriate fitting costumes to avoid tripping and snagging.

 Do not give homemade or unwrapped treats to children. You want to make sure that you know whose homes you are going to.

Another option trick-or-treaters have is to visit the trunk-or-treats being offered at different locations. As a kid I remember being so excited to go trick-or-treating. Stay in a group.

If children carry a prop such as a sword, purchase the flexible plastic or soft variety.

 Do not take shortcuts through back yards, alleys or parks.

When crossing streets, do so only in designated crosswalks and only after checking for traffic. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution.

For those parents whose children have food allergy concerns, look for a teal pumpkin to denote homes with a food-free treat. Never approach a auto offering candy. You always have the possibility that someone will take it a little too far. and that’s when we would get involved in it.

HOMEOWNERS: Keep your porch lights and other exterior lights turned on.

Use a battery-powered candle or glow stick in jack-o-lanterns.

Never invite children into your home.

Restrain your pets. Some dogs enjoy visitors, however, dogs may jump on or bite children unexpectedly.
