Microsoft has announced that “Halo 5: Guardians” brought in over $US400 million (£260 million) during its first week on sale, bringing the total amount generated by the franchise to $US5 billion (£3.2 billion). In terms of players actually playing the game, Halo 5: Guardians was the most played game on Xbox One in its first week, and the most played game on Xbox Live. Presumably the other two million hours was spent in menus or on Custom Games or something. Over 45 million REQ packs have been acquired.
Also, the game has apparently earned a Guinness World Record title for “most watched video game launch broadcast” thanks to 330,000 unique streams with 5.5 million total views throughout the week. Microsoft’s $400m Halo 5 figure, unusually, includes sales of the game and hardware, so costly console bundles boost the revenue.
The Xbox One exclusive has already gone straight to the top of the United Kingdom sales charts, selling 50 per cent more than the multiformat Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.
On October 27, Microsoft released Halo 5: Guardians, the long-awaited new installment in its hugely popular gaming series. The competition will run December through March and be divided into five regions, with the best players from the US and Canada, Europe, along with the Middle East and Africa, Greater Asia, Latin America, as well as Australia and New Zealand coming together to battle for dominance.
