Hamilton said he has kept his motivation intact despite his poor run and was boosted by visiting the Mercedes factory in Britain before flying to the United States. He won the U.S.

As for the championship, Rosberg is adamant he is still chasing grands prix wins race-by-race.

It is no secret that despite being on the same team, that there is a stiff competition between Hamilton and Rosberg.

The Mercedes driver has vowed not to throw in the towel even though Rosberg could secure the title this weekend in Mexico.

Rosberg, victor of nine races to Hamilton’s seven so far this season, was seventh on the morning timesheets and 0.759 off Hamilton’s pace but moved up to third in the afternoon – albeit still 0.431 slower than his team mate.

“Of course it’s intense, but at the same time there is an easy-going side”, Rosberg told the BBC of the pair’s ongoing rivalry. “Everyone is thrilled by this battle which we’re finding ourselves in”.

“As I’ve said before, that for me, my way at the moment of achieving the best possible performance is really just to focus on the things that are within my control – and that’s, here in Mexico, try and win the race, and that’s it”.

A transcript of the Ecclestone interview shows that he actually believed Rosberg could deliver a boost to F1, as a new champion would add extra interest. “Obviously I have to win all the races but I knew that at the last race”.

“It’s not important and I focus on my thing and that’s it”, said 31-year-old Rosberg on Thursday.

The Mexican Grand Prix returned to the calendar after an absence of 23 years in 2015 and it was Rosberg who dominated the weekend then.

Gutierrez is under extra pressure to perform. Third in the drivers’ standings and ahead of both Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, Ricciardo has reasons to be smiling despite being denied a couple of genuine opportunities at race wins. Haas F1 owner Gene Haas and team principal Guenther Steiner have not committed to keeping their driver lineup of Gutierrez and Romain Grosjean together in 2017. “The deadline is in two weeks”.

After Sainz and Massa in sixth and seventh places, came Sergio Perez in the sole remaining Force India. “Nico has been driving fantastically all season but I will keep going”. Going on to a next generation of cars, my best future is staying where I am. I would say the Mexican people are very similar to the Brazilian people as well.
