“The Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team today chose to withdraw its notice of intention to appeal against the decision of the Stewards of the British Grand Prix”, a statement from Mercedes read.

Hamilton dived into his jubilant fans for some impromptu crowd surfing after going level with Nigel Mansell on four British Grand Prix wins in an emotional victory.

The win cut Rosberg’s lead in the world championship to four points, subject to an investigation into the German’s comments during a radio dialogue with his pit crew as he tried to resolve a gearbox problem late in the race. The judgment, to be appealed by his team Mercedes, dropped him to third behind Max Verstappen.

Mercedes is appealing the decision.

Instead, a delayed start behind the safety auto would allow Hamilton to pull away early, leaving Rosberg to deal with third-placed Max Verstappen instead.

With five laps left, Rosberg encountered gearbox problems that had him stuck in seventh gear, and stewards are now checking to see if the amount of information exchanged exceeded the maximum allowable under the new team radio rules.

Stewards ruled that the advice he received broke regulations introduced to limit the amount of information teams are able to supply to drivers in those circumstances.

The young Dutchman again showed what a huge challenge he poses to Ricciardo at Red Bull, pushing his vehicle to the limit as he passed Rosberg for second on lap 16 and even led the race on lap 18 when the Mercedes both came in to change onto medium tyres.

The German was penalised for a breach of team radio regulations, dropping him from second to third behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Once the safety auto came in the British driver opened up a lead of nearly four seconds on the first lap and he controlled the race from that moment.

Red Bull’s other driver Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth, and fifth went to Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen more than a minute off the pace of the victor. Sixth place would go to Sahara Force India’s Sergio Perez, while team-mate Nico Hulkenberg finished seventh.

But while the action at Silverstone was fast and furious in front and behind, Perth’s Ricciardo had a fairly lonely run in fourth place.
