‘Hamilton’ wins 11 Tonys, falls one short of a record

“On behalf of the whole theater community and every person in this room, our hearts go out to all of those affected by this atrocity”.

Its attempt to break the 15-year-old record of “The Producers”, however, was thwarted by David Rockwell, a victor for the set of the revival of the musical “She Loves Me”, and by a sterling performer in another show, Cynthia Erivo, who plays tragic-to-triumphant Celie in the acclaimed revival of “The Color Purple”. “Tonight’s show stands as a symbol and a celebration of that principle”. All we can say is you are not on your own right now. Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda also delivered a powerful sonnet about love in place of a traditional acceptance speech while accepting the award for Best Book. Miranda sought to remind those who were consumed by shock and grief that “hope and love last longer” than the “hate and fear” that was displayed on that day.

Hamilton is a revolutionary rap musical about Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s Founding Fathers. “The Tony Awards dedicate tonight’s ceremony to them”.

Although “Hamilton” is expected to sweep most of its categories, some other big wins are also up for grabs.

It claimed 11 awards, including original score, feature actor and actress in a musical, musical direction, orchestrations, and choreography, just one award fewer than the record 12 won by “The Producers”.

For the interlude from “Hamilton”, for example – introduced by video by President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama-it was decided that the number would be performed without the muskets used in the show.

And Ivo van Hove, in contention for his work on two productions this season, was voted best director of a play for his captivating revival of Arthur Miller’s “A View From the Bridge”.

Frank Langella won his fourth Tony for playing a man who has begun his slide into dementia in “The Father”. “She really showed the defiance of the art we all do and how important it is to keep on moving forward”.

“It fills me with such happiness, even on such a sad day as this”, Lange said.

The season was also rich in diversity among actors – 14 of the 40 Tony nominees for acting in plays and musicals were actors of color.

The first comment from the man who’s expected to be the biggest victor of the night, “Hamilton” creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, was an image of a rainbow-colored heart and the word “Orlando”.
