Hamilton wins in Germany to extend championship lead

Hamilton seized the advantage at the start from pole-sitter Rosberg, who drove an underwhelming race in front of his home fans, and was never headed. The fact that he was in the lead after the first corner gave Lewis an advantage, one that he would maintain all the was till the very end of the race, winning by a margin of almost seven seconds.

Following the Red Bull pair around for the opening half of the race, Rosberg set about attacking Verstappen after his pitstop and dived past into the hairpin. This engine has done wonderful to get us to where we are and I’m super grateful for the life it has led and the laps we’ve led with it.

Rosberg then dived late for the inside into Turn Six, and got through despite Verstappen moving to the right to defend his place.

The Dutch teenager is the only driver to win a race this season apart from Hamilton and Rosberg and finished 13.4 seconds behind Hamilton.

Ferrari’s first race following the departure of technical director James Allison ended with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen finishing a distant fifth and sixth respectively, while Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg came seventh.

To go from a deficit of 24 points to a lead of 19 in a span of four races is quite a feat that Hamilton has managed to achieve.

He had to serve that at his third and final pit stop on lap 44, having just passed Ricciardo to get back into second place.

“I was hoping to just prolong its life because you don’t know when it’s going to go”.

“I was very happy to get the position because that would have meant second at least, and damage limitation of that sort”. Once he regained his composure, a red-faced Ricciardo said: “I was waiting to say that and I just blew it”.

Williams driver Valtteri Bottas was ninth ahead of Sergio Perez who gave Force India a double-points finish with 10th. Responding to a Russian report which claimed Kyvat would be dropped at the end of the season, he fumed: “First of all, Russian media has no f****** clue about anything”.
