Hammel, Rizzo lead Cubs past Brewers 4

Starlin Castro had two runs batted in for the Cubs, and Anthony Rizzo continues to beat up the Brew Crew getting his third home run in three games. His only mistake was a pitch Ryan Braun hit for his 19th home run in the first. Hendricks has dominated the Brewers in three career starts, however, going 2-0 with a 0.98 ERA.Garza has pitched better in the two starts he has made since coming off the disabled list, but he suffered his fourth loss in five decisions on Sunday at Arizona after allowing three runs over 5 2/3 innings.

Braun hit his 249th career home run in the bottom of the first. Milwaukee received minor leaguers in all three trades.

Matt Carpenter homered for the third time in two games, Michael Wacha pitched seven crisp innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Colorado Rockies 7-0 on Friday night.

“We lost three players from our regular lineup”, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said.

An eight-game winning streak bridging the end of June and beginning of July briefly pumped hope into the team, but that was it. The losing ways returned, forcing management’s hand. Addison Russell added a run-scoring single in the sixth and chased Milwaukee starter Taylor Jungmann (5-3). Garza is 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA and 26 strikeouts in his career against the Cubs. Cubs right-hander Hector Rondon allowed a leadoff single in the ninth, but retired the next three batters in order to collect his 15th save.

NOTES: Less than 24 hours after a deal to ship OF Carlos Gomez to the New York Mets fell apart, the Brewers traded Gomez and RHP Mike Fiers to the Houston Astros for minor league OFs Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana, LHP Josh Hader and RHP Adrian Houser just before Thursday night’s game against the Cubs.

So far, the Cubs have remained pat leading up to the trade deadline, which comes at 4:00 p.m. EDT Friday afternoon.

Chicago picked up two veteran right-handed pitchers, Dan Haren from the Marlins and Tommy Hunter from the Orioles.

The Brewers sent outfielder Gerardo Parra, the hottest hitter on a weak-hitting team, to Baltimore, and they moved reliever Jonathan Broxton to St. Louis.

Jungmann has been impressive in his first stint in the majors, posting quality starts in five straight outings and six of his first nine big-league starts. He is 5-1 with a 1.53 ERA in his last eight starts, but struggled at times with his command against the Brewers.

Brewers: OF Logan Schafer (recalled) and INF-OF Elian Herrera (selected) joined the Brewers, replacing two outfielders, Carlos Gomez (Houston) and Gerardo Parra (Baltimore), who were traded Thursday and Friday respectively.

The Cubs won for the third time in four games since they were swept in a weekend series against lowly Philadelphia. Rizzo’s eight home runs and 21 RBIs at Miller Park are his best totals at any venue outside of Wrigley Field.2.
