The Prime Minister first launched the National Handloom Day celebrations at the University of Madras and then drove straight to the Chief Minister’s residence where she warmly welcomed him at the doorstep.

Last week, Modi was in the state when he went to Rameswaram to participate in former presient A P J Abdul Kalam’s funeral.
He said the sale of khadi products had gone up by 60 percent after his October 2 appeal to people to use at least one khadi product to brighten the lives of the producers.
In Gujarat, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel congratulated Modi for allocating a special day for Indian handloom. He also advocated enlarging use of e-commerce to increase sell of handloom products.
“We need to popularise this among our youth”. Sources in the Textile Ministry said the dhoti was chosen from Tamil Nadu for its unique design. “This will give the much-needed boost to the handloom sector”, he added.
On Karnataka’s proposed dam across river Cauvery at Mekedatu, which Jayalalithaa said was “in violation” of the final award, she urged Modi to advise that the state not to proceed with the project without Tamil Nadu’s concurrence.
Flags of AIADMK and BJP were seen in some of the places through which the Prime Minister’s cavalcade passed. To mark the occasion a function will also be held here at Weavers Service Centre, and it can also be viewed in Chennai through live telecast. Top police officials are directly supervising the security arrangements. While there was suspense over whether the meeting will happen, Jayalalithaa received the Prime Minister at Chennai Airport and later she hosted lunch at her Poes Garden residence.
An exhibition showcasing master creations of the awardees is also being inaugurated on the occasion in the adjacent senate building of Madras University.
