Earlier on Thursday, authorities at the hospital had declared the cricketer, popularly known as the “Little Master”, dead and this was widely reported by the Pakistani media. His son, Test player, Shoaib Mohammad, had said that Hanif’s condition had deteriorated since Sunday forcing him to be put on the ventilator. Hanif had been suffering from the ailment for 3 years and was having breathing problems.
One of the country’s finest batsmen, he still holds the record for highest score (337) in an innings by a Pakistani batsman, followed by Inzamamul Haq (329) and Younus Khan (313).
Former Test cricketer Hanif Mohammad has survived after losing heart beat for six minutes at Aga Khan Hospital, son Shoaib Mohamamd confirmed on Thursday. He had informed the media that chemotherapy wasn’t helping his father anymore.
Regarded as the most compact batsman in the world during his playing days, Hanif could bowl with both arms.
It was also the only Test match instance of a triple century in a team’s second innings until it was equaled by New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum against India in 2014. He was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in January 2009 for his contribution to the game of cricket and its development in Pakistan.
