Ramirez had his first career game with three home runs to go with a career-high six RBI. Indeed, Hanley Ramirez almost single-handedly delivered the game for the Red Sox, with a career-high three home runs and six RBIs.

Thankfully, Hembree would keep it there, and while Tommy Layne quickly found himself in huge trouble in the top of the sixth, putting the first three men on to load the bases with zero outs, Matt Barnes came through with one of the biggest clutch relief appearances of the season, getting a close double play as Hanley Ramirez (who else?) stepped on first and fired home, where Sandy Leon completed the twin killing upon review.
Ramirez didn’t have a three-homer game to his credit until Wednesday night. This will be Duffey’s second career game against the Red Sox. It was the sixth walk-off win for the M’s this season, tied for most in franchise history (1986). The Twins are 2-5 in the last 7 meetings in Boston.
Earlier you read about the tension heating up in the 4th inning. The Cubs took two of three from the Mets in their rematch of last year’s NL Championship Series. A third inning shot traveled more than 400 feet to center. That’s his 20th homer.
The game seemed well in hand, but the 4th inning did not go well for the new Sox Drew Pomeranz.
Pomeranz, who had a 2.47 ERA and led the National League with an.
Jaime Garcia (7-6) allowed a run in 5 2-3 innings in the second game, and Seung Hwan Oh earned his fourth save in five chances, and second of the day.
Milwaukee worked over Pittsburgh 9-5.
Shaw boomed one deep into the night and up the right field bleachers. Naquin had his first multi-homer game.
“I don’t hit homers when I try to hit homers”, he explained to reporters after Boston’s 11-7 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Since the All-Star break, Giants starting pitchers have allowed a whopping 11 wallops in just 24 1/3 innings. Gyorko, dealt by the Padres in the offseason for outfielder Jon Jay, is 13 for 21 against his old team with six homers and 10 RBIs. He also homered in the first half won by the Cardinals 4-2.
In Detroit, Max Kepler and Eddie Rosario homered off Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth and Minnesota scored three runs in the inning to down the Tigers. Ortiz came up again in the fourth and drove the first pitch he saw from Peavy way out to right. Votto is 11 for 20 in the last six games with two homers, a double and six walks. He started at third base in both games of the doubleheader. The Reds won four of seven this season against the Braves, who have the league’s worst record at 33-62. On defense, he hasn’t looked out of place at first base since transitioning from the outfield in spring training, but he’s never looked as good at the position as he did last night. He pounded a three-run home run, and after Grant Green singled, Trevor Brown put a moon shot over the Green Monster to cut the deficit to 8-5. He gave up a leadoff base hit to Xander Bogaerts through the left side of the infield, then was given a brief stay of execution when David Ortiz flew out to the warning track in dead center.
Donaldson’s homer off Patrick Corbin (4-9) landed in the Chase Field swimming pool in the first inning.
In Oakland, Doug Fister pitched seven innings and Jose Altuve continued his torrid hitting for Houston.
Goeddel snapped an 0-for-16 slump with an opposite-field shot to right to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the first. Baseball’s leading hitter is 12 for his last 17 in his last four games. Mac Williamson hit a three-run homer, and the San Francisco right fielder also went over the right-field bullpen wall in pursuit of one of Ramirez’s homers. He hit two-run drives in the second, third and sixth inning.
Barnes was the star of a beat-up bullpen that is now missing Koji Uehara, Junichi Tazawa, and Craig Kimbrel. Correspondingly, RHP Noe Ramirez was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket…. He also played on the 2015 Stanley Cup victor with Chicago.
