Hanley’s homers rescue Pomeranz, 1st-place Sox

Matt Cain only lasted into the third inning and the Giants almost erased an 8-0 deficit before Ramirez’s third two-run blast of the night virtually ensured that Bruce Bochy’s team would leave Fenway Park still looking for their first victory here in 101 years.

Hanley Ramirez launched a trio of three-run homers and made a series of outstanding defensive plays to lead Boston past San Francisco 11-7 at a sold-out Fenway Park. Hanley Ramirez sent Giants outfielders back, back, back.

In his first start for the Red Sox, Pomeranz was fine – for the first three innings. There was a lot of electricity in the ballpark. “They saw two very good baseball games”.

Watch Julian Edelman hit a homer over the Green Monster: “Unbelievable experience”, Edelman said.

The crowd of 38,201 was a sellout and the highest of the season for the Red Sox. “They know that I’m working hard every day and giving everything that I’ve got on the field, and it’s what I’m supposed to do”.

Hanley Ramirez’s three homers power Red Sox to 11-7 win over Giants: Hanley Ramirez told his Red Sox teammates in the dugout that he wasn’t going to swing for the fences in his final at-bat.

After three scoreless innings at Fenway Park in which Drew Pomeranz looked every bit the All-Star he was with the San Diego Padres, the left-hander pitched as ordinarily as the rest of the No. 4 and No. 5 starters the Sox have used all season.

“But one more shutout”, Bochy said, slyly, “and I may change my mind”. “I was trying to go to the moon”. “Made some bad fastball location pitches and they made me pay for it”. He allowed five runs on eight hits in 3-plus innings of work.

Ramirez, who has registered 18 two-homer performances in the major leagues, increased his career total to 221 blasts in 1,414 games.

Ramirez drove in a career-high six runs and the Red Sox held on even though newly acquired starter Drew Pomeranz struggled to protect an eight-run lead.

Ramirez had already hit two home runs on the night to this point. Bochy also made a strategic gamble that backfired to rake away a bases-loaded, no-out rally in the sixth.

“I’ve faced these guys four times this year”, Pomeranz said. “I thought he threw a very good curveball, particularly the second and third innings”.

Mookie Betts accomplished the feat against the Orioles on May 31. Boston out-hit San Francisco 16-15.

Ramirez’s third homer of the game, a two-run shot to left field, gave the Sox a 10-7 lead and Sandy Leon added an insurance home run to help give Boston its eighth win in nine games.

Ramirez’s second shot into the center field bleachers sparked a five-run third for Boston, which included Leon legging out his first career triple in 276 at-bats. It was his first start since April 2014 that he allowed three home runs.

San Francisco’s Ramiro Pena and Denard Span had RBI singles in the fifth to make it a one-run game.

Anthony DeSclafani (5-0) gave up eight hits, including Freddie Freeman’s homer, in eight innings. Bogaerts slammed his helmet down and was checked out by trainers, but he stayed in the game.

But when Ramirez was plunked in the fourth inning by San Francisco reliever Albert Suarez – apparently in retribution for his hitting exploits – he could be seen mounting to the San Francisco reliever, “I’ll get you back”.

Home plate umpire Stu Scheurwater immediately issued warnings to both benches.

“That’s Sox nation”, he said. “This is a unique injury for a pitcher”. RHP Brad Ziegler will serve as the closer in Uehara’s absence. Correspondingly, RHP Noe Ramirez was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.
