After winning five of six games, the Yankees (61-59) enter Friday’s six-game road trip with two straight losses.

But they needed more than that to overcome Sabathia’s outing. He was scheduled to run through drills in the afternoon and, if deemed available off the bench Tuesday night, Gardner would start Wednesday afternoon, manager Joe Girardi said.

The seven runs were the most Sabathia has allowed since April of previous year, and the 12 strikeouts were his most since 2012.

Donaldson is having another MVP-caliber season with a.291/.402/.561 slash line and 28 home runs with 6.3 wins above replacement, per FanGraphs. Sabathia then walked Melvin Upton, and allowed a double to Ezequiel Carrera. Gary Sanchez followed up his two home run day with another one today.

Sanchez, who has essentially become the Yankees’ everyday starting catcher, finished 2-for-3 with a walk. In the fourth, the Yankees got another run back when Starlin Castro hit another solo home run. He previously had two seasons with 14 home runs.

The Yanks will look to salvage the series as CC Sabathia (7-9, 4.20 ERA) goes up against J.A. Happ (16-3, 2.96 ERA) in a battle of southpaws.

Sabathia allowed three runs in the second inning, but his completely really fell apart in the fifth.
