Happy Birthday! Guillermo Del Toro Turns 51 Today
Guillermo del Toro may be having little luck within the video game space – namely, the Silent Hills cancellation – and the ongoing troubles with his Pacific Rim sequel, but the director is on the verge of returning to a genre that he knows and loves with Crimson Peak. It is always exciting when a del Toro movie is on the horizon and I cannot wait to see what he has in store for us this time around. Although it was pulled from the Universal release schedule to help with rewrites and so on, Del Toro has stated emphatically that he’s still working on it as an active project.

With author Daphne du Maurier (Rebecca)serving as an inspiration, Crimson Peak centers on a woman named Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) whose husband’s (Tom Hiddleston) house may be inhabited by ghosts. Del Toro served as producer on Chastain’s movie Mama, but this is the first time that the Oscar nominated actress has been directed by him.
The eight-minute piece looks at how the director manages to “explode the limitations” perhaps set in place by Walt Disney fairy tales, by pulling in a number of different sources as inspiration for the film’s design and story and never giving too much credence to one.
Showcasing just enough secrets from Allerdale Hall to have us gleeful – and petrified – with excitement, the behind-the-scenes clip really underlines the craftsmanship that went into building the decrepit abode for Crimson Peak.

Crimson Peak opens on Friday, October 16th. 16, 2015, so be sure to get those Alamo Drafthouse reservations in quick if you want that glass.
