The West Indies drew first blood in the two-match Twenty20 worldwide series, winning a record high-scoring match by a single run after Dwayne Bravo outwitted India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni with the final ball of a thrilling contest.
The prospects of an outcome to the game were significantly reduced when the rains came for about 20 minutes from around 12.40 PM Eastern Caribbean time with India seemingly enroute to victory after containing the West Indians.
India will take on West Indies in the second and final T20 fixture of their ongoing series as the two sides clash on Sunday, August 28.
Rahul, who was included in the playing eleven ahead of Shikhar Dhawan, hit 110 not out from 51 balls with the help of 12 fours and five sixes and India were on the verge of chasing down West Indies’ mammoth 245 for 6. This was the highest ever T20 worldwide score against India by any team, surpassing the 219 for 4 by South Africa in Johannesburg in March 2012. “A win would have been ideal, but there were so many things we did right today”, Dhoni, who scored 43 off 25 balls, added.
Rahul scored his maiden Twenty20 global century in 46 balls and stayed unbeaten on 110.
In the next ball of the following over, Jasprit Bumrah (2-26) had Marlon Samuels (5) caught behind but Kieron Pollard (13) struck a four and a six to take West Indies to 89 for four at the end of 11 overs.
West Indies lead the series 1-0. Rahane’s dismissal brought Virat Kohli who impressed with a few glorious boundaries got out to Dwayne Bravo. The match will begin at 7:30 this evening Indian Time.
Indian bowlers put up a collective effort in restricting the West Indies to a manageable total on a slow wicket that had nothing for the pacers. Opener Johnson Charles was the top scorer with 43 runs, while Amit Mishra claimed three wickets for 24.
Andre Russell opened the bowling for West Indies and was dispatched for a six over long leg by Rohit Sharma in the third ball of the innings.
