Victory resounded for the Congress Party in the decisive Uttarakhand floor test as the Supreme Court on Wednesday announced the grand old party now has the majority in the state assembly.

After hearing government’s side, the top court said Harish Rawat can take charge as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. Subsequently nine rebel Congress MLAs were disqualified by the Speaker for siding with BJP.

According to sources, the Congress has won the trust vote clinching 33 votes while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could manage only 28.

“Democracy won in Uttarakhand!”, Gandhi tweeted after the results of the assembly floor test said that the Congress had won and that Chief Minister Harish Rawat’s government was to be reinstated after revocation of President’s Rule. All six of them have apparently voted for Rawat. The BJP is said to have managed 28, the number of MLAs it has in the assembly. “PDF, BSP, UKD.BJP can claim anything they want, victor will be Uttarakhand”, he said outside the Assembly. He was also a strong contender for chief minister’s post in the Congress, but the party high command chose Harish Rawat for the post.

Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Ajay Bhatt had said he was confident that the MLAs will listen to the voice of their conscience. As many as 10 MLAs, including nine rebels, have left it. Rawat has used the loot of state resources to bribe MLAs. The official count of the votes will take place in the Supreme Court on Wednesday but that has not stopped the social media from having its word.

A bench comprising justices Dipak Misra and Shiva Kirti Singh allowed the Union government to proceed with lifting the proclamation of President’s rule in the state.
