“All we have is a Conservative, Nigel Wright, making sure the taxpayer didn’t have to pay”, said Van Loan, who is running for re-election on October 19 and now serves as the Tories’ Government House Leader in Parliament.

But, in light of Benjamin Perrin’s testimony this week, that’s not an explanation that carries any conviction.

Perrin, who performed a twin position within the PMO as in-house counsel and a particular advisor on authorized affairs and coverage, advised the courtroom he got here up with a proposed answer that may contain taking a look at different indicators to reveal a private connection to a province or territory.

He told court that Novak was in the room throughout the call, although Wright did all the talking. Wright was investigated by the RCMP however by no means charged.

Harper said the difference is that Conservatives have ensured there is accountability.

Wright testified earlier that the comment related to a conversation he had with Harper in which he told the prime minister he intended to make Duffy repay the money, but did not go into specifics.

To Harper’s supporters, it’s likely seen as more evidence that the mainstream media and the courts are against him, Denis said.

But again, does it matter?

In an online survey released this week based on responses from recruited members of a panel of would-be voters, Abacus Data found 22 per cent of respondents were following the Duffy trial closely. It may not be everyone but it’s not “no-one”.

“Canadians no longer trust their prime minister to tell them the truth”.

Perrin was face cross examination by Duffy’s lawyer on Friday. Nothing surprises anymore – if there was a significant cannibal vote in the country, the suspicion is the Conservatives would be supplying them with a tax break on missionaries.

On Thursday, the Tory campaign visited the new riding of Courtenay-Alberni, where longtime Conservative John Duncan is in a tight race.

Wright, who was once Stephen Harper’s chief of staff, ended six days of testimony Wednesday and returns to his current career in the corporate world in England.

Perhaps the only upside for the Conservatives is that they have time to turn things around. They included calling off the audit.

A year later, the Tories were in the ascendancy, polling at around 32%, as the public backed the government’s military mission in Iraq.

Harper has been trying -in vain, for the most part – to move away from the Duffy fallout that has dogged his campaign, preferring instead to promote his party’s bread-and-butter campaign promises on growing the economy, helping families and keeping the streets safe.
