Harper Lee’s hometown mourns her death, remembers her life

Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) praised the author in a tweet Friday, saying “One of the great writers of all time, Harper Lee laid bare the soul of America and her work will continue to educate others for generations”.

“Today we mourn the passing of Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Harper Lee”. And I do think Harper Lee, she depicted the, you know, polarization in a Southern town so well. Though Lee had a stroke several years ago, she had been in good health despite her age recently.

“I hoped for a little, but I got rather a whole lot and in some ways this was just about as frightening as the quick, merciful death I’d expected”, she said.

“The world has lost a brilliant mind and a great writer”, wrote Spencer Madrie, owner of Ol ‘Curiosities and Book Shoppe, the small independent bookstore Monroeville (6000 inhabitants).

To Kill A Mockingbird is told through the eyes and in the words of Scout, the child of Atticus Finch, and therefore it’s a book that’s very accessible to kids, and that’s why school children have been reading it all these years. “I re-read “To Kill a Mockingbird” during my trial”.

She counted author Truman Capote among her childhood friends, and worked as an assistant on his novel “In Cold Blood”, which examined a multiple killing in Kansas, and was dedicated to Lee.

In 1959, when the rewritten novel passed muster, Ms. Lee expressed her relief in a letter to Ms. Williams.

Born in Monroeville, Alabama, Nelle Harper Lee was known to family and friends as Nelle (pronounced Nell) – the name of a relative, Ellen, spelled backward. “I remember when I started production Harper Lee sent me a telegram that simply said ‘Hey, Boo.’ I was so proud to be a part of that film”.

Other students seem to agree, arguing that Lee’s epic novel is timeless. Peck won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his stirring performance.
