Yet Lee was perfectly at ease and happy during a luncheon held last summer in the days before the release of “Watchman”, said Alabama tourism director Lee Sentell, who attended the event and drove Lee home afterward to The Meadows, the senior center where she lived. There were a lot of them, from the manuscript’s disputed origin to whether Carter, who had durable power of attorney over Lee, should also be serving as the trustee of her estate and the vice president of the newly created Mockingbird Company, a nonprofit Lee created in May 2015 to oversee Mockingbird’s cultural legacy and future stage adaptations of the play.

There are no doubt better novels, judged purely on literary merit, and stories will continue to be invented, in many forms.
Spencer Madrie, owner of Monroeville’s Ol’ Curiosities & Book Shoppe, which is dedicated to the work of Lee and other Southern authors, said the town was in a somber mood as word of Lee’s death spread. She grew up next to Truman Capote, and remained friends with him until he died in 1984. “I was hoping for a quick and merciful death at the hands of the reviewers, but, at the same time I sort of hoped someone would like it well enough to give me encouragement”.
“She was quoting Thomas More and setting me straight on Tudor history”. It starred Gregory Peck as main character Atticus Finch and won three Academy Awards.

Alabama author Nelle Harper Lee, whose celebrated first novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, earned her a Pulitzer Prize for fiction and a perennial spot on many school reading lists, died this morning at the age of 89.
“Harper Lee (was) my 1st favorite author!” She was a country girl who just wanted to tell an honest story about life as she saw it.
“Atticus, he was real nice.”
“She revealed it all … the glory and the fear and the hate and the beauty”.
Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon narrated the audiobook of Go Set A Watchman and paid tribute on her Instagram account. “It propelled me toward my love for lit (literature)”.
“Rest in peace, Harper Lee. ‘The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience'”. The author quietly continued to write, but she made a decision to step out of the spotlight. Her father was a lawyer and a direct descendant of Civil War general Robert E. Lee. “To Kill a Mockingbird” was a gift to us all”, Katie Couric said.
The photos showed a young Harper Lee smoking a cigarette on a front-porch rocker; an aged Harper Lee, with blunt-cut white hair and a wry, blunt gaze, looking like everyone’s ideal great-aunt.
