Fans of “Star Wars” have dominated social media over the weekend, with more than 64 million people engaging in 140 million interactions about the franchise on Facebook, the company said on Monday.
It went viral after the above excerpt with the chicks was posted on Imgur. One commenter shared his own video of some BB-8 toys he said he’s bought “for the office”.
It looks like Jurassic World is simply extending the same courtesy to Star Wars that was extended to them by Disney when they smashed the record previously held by Disney.
IMAX Corporation today announced that Lucasfilms’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens scored a record-setting opening weekend in the United Kingdom with £3.4 million from 42 IMAX® theatres.
The previous record, $208.8m (£140m), was set by Jurassic World in June. It pulled in 120.5 million through Friday, its first full day in domestic theaters, the highest single-day ticket sales ever.
The wild card is China, the world’s second-largest movie market, where “Force Awakens” opens January 9.
Already the latest “Star Wars” has beaten “Jurassic World” for the top spot.
In a statement, Walt Disney Studios chairperson Alan Horn commended film director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and the rest of the Lucasfilm crew for performing beyond expectations.
Abrams’ sequel, set 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, features a strong female heroine in Rey, a young scavenger played by newcomer Daisy Ridley. Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, and Lupita Nyong’o also star in the film.

If you thought Han Solo had a bigger role than expected in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there’s an excellent reason, the filmmakers wanted their money’s worth. “With strong reviews and a strong female lead, 42% of the Saturday/Sunday audience was female (a high figure for the genre)”, he wrote, “and we view this expansion of the marketplace as likely granting the film a higher multiplier”.
