Among major markets overseas, United Kingdom leads with $59.4 million to date, followed by Germany ($31.4 million), France ($26.9 million), Australia ($22.4 million), Japan ($15.9 million), and Russian Federation ($13.3 million).
Abrams’ sequel, set 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, features a strong female heroine in Rey, a young scavenger played by newcomer Daisy Ridley.
The movie could become the highest grossing of all time, topping the .8 billion that Avatar – released in 2009 – raked in. But just how much money did “The Force Awakens” actors earn to join a galaxy far, far away? The total earnings of the movie since it opened last December 18 and throughout the weekend has been over $518 million, as IGN reports, and this has not let up yet.
But on Tuesday, “Force Awakens” was recognized as the global box office champ, with its $529 million haul outearning the dinosaur flick’s take of $525 million.
While Star Wars brought in an out-of-this-world $517 million (£347 million) on its opening weekend, Jurassic World drew in $525 million (£352 million) in sales in June, crowning it the biggest box office opening ever.
The 36-year-old actor was initially told his part as X-wing pilot Poe Dameron would only bit a short-lived role, which he accepted and decided it would be “better” to just spend a small period of time in the sci-fi film rather than be in three “Star Wars” movies.
However, in some countries, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” didn’t perform as expected such as Japan, where there has been a large “Star Wars” following.
