Many Packers fans got a rude awakening when they walked into the Hall of Fame and were greeted with a Minnesota Vikings jersey hanging next to Brett Favre’s Packers uniform in his locker.
“I think the correct answer for us would be, ‘We love it, we’d like to play in it every year, ‘ ” Packers defensive back Micah Hyde said. “I don’t regret anything, and that’s what I’m most proud of”.
With time, the bad blood between Favre, the Packers and fans of the team subsided, and last summer, he was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame.
He started 321 consecutive games, more than any other player at any other position in National Football League history.
“I worked extremely hard to get to this point”, said the Colts’ first-round draft choice in 1996.
Recalling a poor game he played, his next-to-last in high school, Favre said he overheard his father tell his assistant coaches not to worry, that his son would redeem himself the next week.
Favre couldn’t have said it better. “I can’t say enough about what Brett meant to the Green Bay Packers”. We knew that if we helped make it possible for them to bring their whole selves to work they would give us their all.
This year’s Hall of Fame class also included Packers quarterback Brett Favre, Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison, Rams tackle Orlando Pace, linebacker Kevin Greene, guard Dick Stanfel and coach Tony Dungy.
On the way back from the game, his mother-in-law Deanna told him: “You know your dad said to me he had hoped or could not wait for the day that you’re inducted into the Hall of Fame so he could introduce you”. He still holds the record for most career interceptions (336). “You got a look at how Lambeau Field has changed and Packers fans gratitude for what he did for us”, said Packers fan Greg Nygaard.
“This is tougher than any third-and-15, I can assure you”, a tearing Favre said of talking about the emotion he endured discussing his father. Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young credits DeBartolo for working to create strong relationships between players and owners throughout the NFL. But I never forgot that statement and that comment that he made to those other coaches. Two years after that first playoff appearance, Favre won the first of three straight NFL MVP awards to become the first player in NFL history to win the award in three straight seasons. Holmgren coached in one more, losing with the Seahawks.
CANTON, Ohio Two of the NFLs top quarterbacks, Aaron Rodgers and Andrew Luck, will be on hand for todays Hall of Fame game. Coach, thank you for investing in players, investing in men. To share in that joy with you guys tonight, what an incredible night, what an incredible week.
“Coach Dungy has been a shining beacon of light in every facet of his life and vocation”, said John Wooten, chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, an organization of minority coaches, front office, scouting and game day officials in the NFL.
