Harry Kane could miss two months with ankle injury

Tottenham Hotspur’s victory over Sunderland on Sunday has come at a considerable cost as Harry Kane suffered an ankle injury that will see him sidelined for months and not weeks.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino says he expects to find out the full extent of the forward’s injury later today.

“We all felt guilty but the most important thing is the way you react, and yesterday was a very good signal for the manager, the club and the fans too”. There are different rumours, we can not guess whether it’s eight weeks, 10, four, one. I’m sure there may be a problem with his ligaments but it’s hard to assess today.

For England, Kane is also now out of World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia next month and is also a major doubt for the home clash with Scotland in November.

Kane is nearly certain to miss England’s World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia in three weeks’ time, as well as Champions League fixtures against CSKA Moscow next Tuesday and Bayer Leverkusen on October 18.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane pounced on a comical piece of defending to break Sunderland’s resistance and secure a deserved 1-0 win that lifted the London side to third in the Premier League standings. We can only be positive and try to help him become stronger than before.

Kane’s absence will afford summer signing Vincent Janssen an opportunity to stake his claim as the club’s leading striker.

“It was tough. He twisted the ankle”, Pochettino said.

Pickford was finally undone when Kane capitalised on Papy Djilobodji’s failed clearance, leaving Sunderland 19th in the table and with just one point from their opening five league games under David Moyes. Fortunately for Spurs, they have a variety of ways to cope without their talisman.

Spurs also lost Mousa Dembele, who was making his return from a six-game suspension, and Eric Dier, both of whom went off holding their hamstrings.

It remains to be seen whether Pochettino will risk starting Janssen in Wednesday’s League Cup tie against Gillingham, although the Dutchman has received backing from the captain, Hugo Lloris, to step into the breach.
