Harry Kane injury causes worry for Mauricio Pochettino

The Spurs and England striker had two scans yesterday on his right ankle, which he injured on Sunday after scoring the victor aginst Sunderland at White Hart Lane.

Son could deputise for Kane if scans confirm a lengthy absence for the England striker, but it is more likely Vincent Janssen will be set for an elongated run in the side.

Striker Harry Kane was on target with a typical poacher’s goal, finding himself in the right place at the right time to poke home after a defensive blunder, but the Spurs faithful will be sweating over his fitness after he was stretchered off the pitch late on.

Injuries to Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele threatened to accelerate that process but both are said to have minor hamstring issues at worst, with the pair aiming to be available for Saturday’s trip to Middlesbrough.

“But if we look at our performance, it’s true that we need to do better”.

Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford believes the club can recover from yet another poor start to a Premier League campaign.

Kane finished from close range just before the hour for his second goal in as many league matches, but the 22-year-old was removed from the game three minutes from time after suffering the injury.

“When you are involved in different competitions like the Champions League, it’s a new competition for us and we spent a lot of energy on Wednesday”, he said.

The Argentinian added: “It’s new for us, and it’s important to learn, and sometimes you are surprised when you make changes”.

They managed 31 attempts on goal and had been the dominant force, even before Adnan Januzaj was sent off for a second yellow card late on.

The winger opted to play at the Olympics this summer rather than undergo a full pre-season with Spurs, and was nearly sold in the transfer window, just one year after joining the club.

“Today we always tried to go forward”.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino read his players the riot act and accused them of letting their standards slip.

“We made a very good performance”. This is the story of the season and that’s why we need all the players committed to the club.

“We should have won 2-0 or 3-0 or more”.

“It might have been a totally different game if we’d scored the one that was cleared off the line in the first half, so we’ll take positives from it, but it’s unfortunate that we haven’t got a point to show for it”.
