Movies and merchandise followed, of course, but at its core, the Harry Potter phenomenon is about a good story well told in ink on paper and about the enduring joy of reading. A script rather than a narrative novel, it is being published a day after the official opening of the London stage production of the same name.

The two-part play stretches over five hours and was co-devised by Rowling, written by Jack Thorne and directed by Tiffany. The play sees Potter as an “overworked” employee of the Ministry of Magic and centers on his and Ginny Weasley’s son Albus and Rowling recently pleaded with fans not to spoil the plot of the play for others.

Harry Potter fans will be hoping to catch a glimpse of stars such as JK Rowling at the opening gala of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child.

Events at bookstores this week, timed to the midnight release of the book, encourage fans of all ages to come dressed appropriately – and to bring their wands and celebrate anew the wonderful world of words.

According to staff at the bookshop, customers have pre-ordered over 1000 copies of the book.

Those eager to find out what happens in the time-twisting instalment can read the review of 10-year-old Toby L’Estrange, a speed-reading prodigy who has been challenged by Amazon to write the first review of the new Harry Potter story.

The play is already sold out through May 2017. Frenzies for the latest electronic toy, movie-inspired toys or electronic games like Pokemon Go are more likely to capture popular imagination.

The poll, which comprised over 650 respondents aged between nine and 30, revealed that for its Indian fans, the scar on Harry Potter’s forehead is the most recognisable symbol.
