Haryana: Biryani samples collected from Mewat had beef in it

Superintendent of police of Mewat Kuldeep Singh has given a statement that “police had collected 7 samples (of biryani)” but have not received any report yet. “According to the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act, anyone selling or storing beef is liable to five years’ of imprisonment”.

Police claim to have found beef in the biriyani they have been collecting over the past few days.

Following a complaint, authorities in the district collected seven samples of biryani from shopkeepers and vendors in the Ferozpur Jhirka area.

Deputy director of Mewat animal husbandry department, Narender Kumar, said that more samples would be collected if such complaints were received.

Meanwhile talking to the media in Chandigarh on Friday, Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij said in the light of the fact findings, the concerned officers have been asked to take action as per law. For those who thought a cop’s job was to sniff for clues and solve crimes, this beef hunting mission wherein an officer has to catch “hidden” beef pieces under a bed of rice comes as a freakish twist to conventional policing. “We said we don’t, but they said that was why (we were being punished)”, the woman said. “This is a serious offence”, a government source was also quoted as saying.

“I will able to comment on the issue after I receive the lab reports from LLRU”, Singh told HT.

Senior Congress member Aftab Ahmed has termed the move an attempt to humiliate “a particular community”.

“We received some reports and went ahead to confirm it”.

The police have been told to immediately book vendors if they find beef. The district lawyers are also planning a PIL against the “attempt to disrupt communal harmony” of the district.
