Hasbro bows to pressure, adds Rey to ‘Star Wars’ Monopoly

Days ago, the internet erupted in a tizzy when it was pointed out that the new ‘Star Wars: “The Force Awakens” edition of the grandfather of all board games Monopoly did not include a playing piece of Rey played by Daisy Ridley.

Incredibly, Hasbro initially said that it left Rey out of the Monopoly set because as it was released in September prior to the launch of the film her inclusion would have spoilt the plot for fans. Of course, the company could’ve gotten around this issues by simply including her as a fifth character with her signature bo-staff.

She’s also now available at your local retailer on boxes of Yoplait Go-Gurt.

“We are thrilled with the popularity of this compelling character and will continue to look for ways to showcase Rey across all of our product lines”, the spokesperson added. It’s hard to see how including a figure of a character that is prominently featured in The Force Awaken’s poster would spoil the story, but that was their reasoning. They have launched the Twitter hashtag #WheresRey to complain about the omission of the new film’s main female lead.

In that case, toy companies could at least argue that Gamora was one of four equals, but Hasbro and others have no excuse when it comes to Rey. “Specifically, a Target exclusive 12” figure set didn’t include her, but had all male characters instead. Both movies are produced by Disney, which also released The Force Awakens.

This, despite the fact that it was clear she was going to be one of the central characters with a role against the Dark Side in the trailers released in the months building up to the film.
